2 min readJun 3, 2024
The rise of generative AI, spearheaded by ChatGPT’s initial release, has catapulted large language models (LLMs) into the mainstream. Now, almost every major tech player has their own LLM in the game, each with unique strengths and capabilities.
Here’s my breakdown of the 20 most significant LLMs as of June 2024:
The Giants:
- GPT-4o (OpenAI): The latest and greatest from OpenAI, boasting impressive speed and multimodal capabilities.
- Claude 3 (Anthropic): A major competitor to GPT-4, backed by Amazon and known for its massive context window.
- Grok-1 (xAI): Elon Musk’s entry into the LLM race, currently the largest open-source model available.
- PaLM 2 (Google): The powerhouse behind Google’s Bard (now Gemini), offering a significant upgrade over its predecessor.
The Open-Source Champs:
- Mistral 7B (Mistral AI): A surprisingly powerful model with a small footprint, outperforming many larger competitors.
- Falcon 180B (TII): An impressive upgrade from Falcon 40B, backed by significant funding and outperforming GPT-3.5 on several tasks.
